Painting a wooden house with your own hands outside and inside

The wooden house has a beautiful appearance in the style of a fairytale hut and emphasizes the high status of the owner. But not all owners like the color of natural material in its natural form, and even with lack of care, the structure loses its attractiveness. The problem is solved by painting a wooden house, which allows you to give the structure a new look and provide protection from the harmful effects of external factors. In our article you will learn how to choose the material and process the building inside and out.

What paint to paint a wooden house outside

Before painting a wooden house outside, you need to choose the optimal composition based on the expected result. Next, we will talk about the existing materials and their features.

Antiseptic paints

It is generally accepted that antiseptics are used only for protective purposes. Indeed, these compositions penetrate into the wood structure to a depth of 4-7 mm and provide surface protection from the harmful effects of the environment, incl. diseases. But today manufacturers produce full-fledged antiseptic paints.

There are two types of materials:

  • Covering - form an opaque coating on the surface, which completely covers the structure of the tree, but retains the natural relief;
  • Glazing - a transparent coating is formed on the tree, preserving the original pattern.

Antiseptic paints are widely used in the treatment of facades made of polished and planed wood of elite species, which have a distinct relief and beautiful texture. The compositions dry quickly; for full protection of the tree, a double treatment is enough.

Paints and varnishes antiseptics are used only on "fresh", previously unpainted surfaces. Impregnation should be performed every 2-3 years, but elite formulations are enough for 5-6 years.

Acrylic paints

In Europe, more than 80% of wooden houses are painted with acrylic paints. They are available in the form of emulsions and dispersions. Materials are made on the basis of copolymers of acrylic or acrylic resins with the possible addition of rubbers (natural or artificial), fungicides and antiseptics. This set of components provides products with the following properties:

  • Weatherproof coating;
  • An elastic film forms on the surface, which does not interfere with natural air exchange;
  • Lack of a pronounced odor;
  • A large selection of colors and shades for every taste, the ability to create a unique color by mixing white paint with colorants;
  • Good adhesion to wood surface ensures a long service life of the material;
  • Resistant to fire.

Exterior painting of a wooden house using acrylic compounds is performed every 8-10 years.

Alkyd paints

After application, a waterproof film is created on the wood that protects against impact. The paints dry in just 20-30 minutes. During this time, they do not have time to penetrate deep into the structure of the tree, but they can withstand low temperatures down to -30 ° C.

Basically, windows, doors, thresholds and other building elements that are most exposed to moisture are treated with alkyd paints.

The material has a limited palette of colors, but this problem is solved by mixing two or more shades. Today, many manufacturers produce colorless alkyd paints that are tinted similar to acrylic paints.

Oil paints

This is the optimal ratio in terms of durability and the price of painting a wooden house. The paint and varnish material is deeply absorbed into the solid wood and creates reliable protection against environmental influences.

The only drawback is sun burnout. Therefore, it is better to apply oil paints from the north side of the house, which is not exposed to strong UV exposure. Also, do not forget that it will take about a day to completely dry the applied layer.

Painting a wooden house outside: stages

Painting technology is as follows:

  1. Removing accumulated dirt.
  2. Priming of metal elements (nails, bolts, brackets, etc.) to prevent corrosion.
  3. Drying the tree - 2-3 weeks.
  4. Priming a wooden surface with an antiseptic, especially at the ends of the structure.
  5. Application of 2-3 coats of paint on a dry surface using a roller, brush or spray gun. Before applying the next coat, the previous one must dry.
  6. A house of any number of storeys needs to start painting from top to bottom, buildings of 2 and 3 floors - from top to bottom, from the junction of walls and roof. In this case, drips will not form on the surface, and dried paint will not spoil the design of the building.
  7. Stir the paint periodically to achieve a uniform shade.

Do-it-yourself painting of a wooden house should be done in calm weather and in the absence of heat. At high temperatures, the material dries quickly and does not have time to be absorbed into the structure properly.

Remember one more rule: a new house from a bar and a rounded log can be processed only after complete shrinkage of the log house, which takes 2-3 years. Dried wood must be caulked again and only then the paint and varnish layer should be applied.

Painting a wooden house using old paint

Over the years, the paint begins to peel off and fade in the sun, so the exterior of the building needs renovation. Painting an old wooden house outside consists of the following steps:

  1. Removing old coatings and dirt with a wire brush.
  2. Antiseptic treatment.
  3. Surface treatment with alkaline detergent for better adhesion to paintwork material.
  4. Complete removal of old paint until the structure looks completely like a house made of natural wood.
  5. Elimination of deformations: putty and grinding of small cracks of different sizes with appropriate sealants.

Further, the re-painting of the wooden house is carried out in the same order as the primary painting for the new structure.

When processing an old house, it is better to use the material with which the house was originally painted. If the old coating rolls up into a tube, an acrylic compound was previously used. Old oil paints tend to crack and mesh when worn.

How to paint a wooden house inside

During internal processing, more requirements are imposed on the materials, since the paint should not have a pronounced odor and emit toxic substances. The following formulations meet these criteria.

Water-based acrylic paint

This material does not emit a specific odor, dries quickly and is harmless to health. Another advantage is the ease of handling and painting a wooden house. At your discretion, you can create unique shades by mixing different pigments. If streaks appear, the problem is quickly solved with a damp cloth.

Alkyd enamel

These paints show good resistance to moisture, sunlight, temperature changes and dirt. Therefore, they are often used to paint the walls of a wooden house in the kitchen.

Polyurethane paint

The main advantage of the composition is its water resistance. The paint forms a protective film and is well suited for the treatment of rooms with high humidity.

Interior painting of a wooden house: technology

Stages of work:

  1. Removal of dirt, dust and old paint (if any).
  2. Priming of metal elements.
  3. Drying of the wooden surface and subsequent treatment with a primer.
  4. Thorough mixing of paint.
  5. Application of the first layer of paint until completely dry, after which another 1-2 layers are applied.
  6. You need to start painting from hard-to-reach places: joints, corners and other areas where the roller does not reach.
  7. Painting the main area using a roller.

When choosing a material for painting a wooden house inside and out, pay attention to the manufacturer. In Ukrainian conditions, the following brands have proven themselves best: Remmers (Germany), Pinotex AkzoNobel (Estonia), Tikkurila (Finland), Sadolin (Sweden), Belinka (Slovenia).
